4 Reasons Why Narcissists Can’t Have Intimate Relationships

What is narcissism?

Narcissism, also known as Narcissistic Personality Disorder, is a disorder in which a person has an inflated sense of self-importance. Those who are diagnosed with this disorder are often found to be demanding, self-centered and arrogant.

Narcissists in most cases have a very shallow social circle. They feel high level of power or superiority over people around them. They usually interact with people who they think are very unique or gifted in some sense.

Narcissists make you feel that they are extremely self-confident, with this trait, they are able to draw a lot of people towards themselves, however the projection that they are very confident is sometimes illusionary. They can be very weak and vulnerable at times.

A relationship with a narcissist is not very normal. They tend to take advantage of kindness of their partner. Your act of kindness can be perceived as your weakness by your narcissist partner.

Below you will find reasons why it is difficult (almost impossible) to have an intimate relationship with a narcissist.

Trust Issues –

When you become intimate with someone, you become vulnerable, having vulnerability requires trust. People with narcissist disorder find it difficult to trust anyone. Although narcissists are emotionally stunted but they can be equally intelligent as their partners. They will refrain from committing to an actual relationship.

They want something, not someone –

As narcissists perceive themselves to be superior to others, in order to feed their hunger for dominance, they victimize their partner. This is the saddest part about having a narcissist partner. It will not be wrong to say that narcissists only give to take away. Their love, tenderness, affection is probably not real.

Abusive –

Research findings have shown that people with narcissist disorder are more likely to indulge in domestic violence because of their lack of empathy towards their partner. It is important to note that most people who abuse their partners are not narcissistic. However, at the same time chances of physical and verbal abuse are higher when in a relationship with a person diagnosed with NPD.

There is only “I”, no “US” –

For a healthy relationship, both partners must have empathy towards each other. Many research and experiments over last many years have concluded that narcissists are incapable of having empathy.
